How do I know if my loved one needs home care?

Spotting the early signs of an elderly parent or loved one needing in-home care can sometimes be difficult. Changes to mobility and independence often occur rapidly and are not always easily spotted through infrequent or even regular visits.

To assist with spotting the early signs, look for changes such as difficulty managing daily tasks like cooking, cleaning, or personal hygiene. Forgetfulness that impacts safety (such as leaving the stove on) or perhaps even noticeable weight loss due to poor nutrition can be strong signs.

Mobility challenges, unexplained bruises, signs of loneliness and isolation can also indicate the need for extra support.

Early intervention through professional in-home care ensures your loved ones remain safe, comfortable, and independent in their own home.

Here is a list of things to look for:

  • Changes in personal hygiene.
  • Difficulty in household tasks.
  • Mobility issues.
  • Forgetfulness and memory problems.
  • Change in eating habits and nutrition.
  • Social isolation and withdrawal.
  • Unexplained injuries.
  • Neglecting medical care.
  • Increased fatigue and sleep issues.
  • Cognitive decline.
What is the difference between in home care and nursing home care?

Nursing home care is often confused with in-home care due to certain small similarities of providing your loved ones with routine support.

In-home care is what DANS specialises in; offering the ability to live independently in a familiar home environment. In-home care is a great way to maintain independence and is touted as a beneficial to helping your loved ones feel both mentally and physically healthier due to familiarity of surroundings.

Nursing home care is characterised by your loved ones moving into a full-time aged care facility outside of the home. While this can often be a good consideration for those requiring higher support levels, research shows that in-home care often providers a far greater degree of personalised direct-care given the one to one nature of the service.

Do DANS care givers have specialised training in dementia or Alzheimer's care?

DANS team of Registered Nurses and care-givers complete mandatory training in Dementia above and beyond their existing accreditations to further enhance our level of care.

Our personalised approach to in-home care allows our team to build strong relationships with your loved ones and work closely with them to make them feel supported and understood.

Can I choose a specific care worker for my loved one?

Yes. You can meet with our proposed care team and select the right combination that will support your loved ones. At DANS, we like to ensure there is a team that knows your loved ones care needs well to maximise the support we can give.

How flexible is the schedule? Can I start with a smaller amount of hours and increase as required?

Yes. We can work with you to define a care plan that meets the needs of your loved ones. As time progresses, we can both decrease or increase the support required to best suit your needs.

We also have a convenient app that allows you to view and manage your loved ones schedule.

How much does in-home care cost?

You can view our fees for private and personalised in-home care below.

There is also opportunity to explore Government subsidised support through a Support at Home arrangement (MyAgedCare) and DANS can help you or your loved one navigate this process.

Can your care workers administer medications or provide medical treatments?

Yes. We can assist with managing medication and the administering of medication.

How do you communicate with family members about the care provided?

With client permission, we are able to communicate with you through numerous methods to ensure you are kept up to date on the support and care your loved one is receiving.

We can communicate through the DANS app, in a communication book at the home or by providing notes from each visit.

You will be assigned a dedicated Care Manager that will be your point of contact at DANS for any care needs or follow up.

How do you match a care worker to my loved one’s needs?

From the outset, we spend a good portion of time getting to know the person we are providing care to. Their needs, their preferred way of working and how we can best go about providing the premium in-home care and support we are renowned for. This includes understanding their life history and interests.

DANS likes to connect you to care workers that you will personally connect with. This could be with a specific preference such as gender of the care worker or experience in dealing with a particular challenge.

We will do our best to align your loved ones with a care worker that has the right industry and life experience to ensure we make the right match.

All DANS personal care staff are Cert III accredited and all work is performed under the direction of our experienced clinical team.
